They were a place for socialization, a place where everybody would gather, from the richest people to the slaves. The Baths of Caracalla are one of the best preserved public baths in the world, a beautiful place that tells you a lot about the culture of the Romans. The Roman public bath had a complex structure. And it was composed of several rooms like a special room for cold baths, one for warm bath and one for very hot baths.

The Baths of Caracalla are spread on 13 hectares and it is 750 feet long, 380 feet wide and 125 feet high. It has a 1600 visitor capacity. Inside these public baths you could even find libraries as it was a multifunctional building. When they were completed back in the year 217, these were the largest "thermae" (the Greek term) in the whole world. Their exact location is southeast of the ancient center of Rome.

These public baths seem to express so many things about the Romans’ culture and they tell us a lot about their habits and a day in their lives. The 3 main rooms were called the calidarium, the tepidarium and the frigidarium. There was even the natatio, the Latin word for open air swimming pool. The Baths of Caracalla were famous on the entire globe because they have certain features and luxuries that you wouldn’t always find in a public Roman bath.

For example, inside the huge stone walls you could find marble seats and the walls were covered in mosaic models. It also has statues and fountains which contribute to the interior beauty of these fascinating buildings. Caracalla is the name of the emperor that has built this public bath (his real name is Marcus Aurelius Antonius).

It was pretty common for emperors and wealthy people to build these baths as they used to become public monuments and it made the person gain more respect and become an important public figure. The Roman public baths were supplied with water via aqueducts that brought the water from nearby rivers. Sometimes, such a public bath would be built around a hot spring as they needed hot water. In other cases, there were special built furnaces that were heating up the water. There are some factors that lead to the decay of these beautiful buildings, among which we can remind about negligence and an earthquake. However, the walls standing are still tall and you can get a pretty good idea of how the building used to look like.
