Guinea Pigs Take Baths
We will explain how guinea pigs take baths because cleaning is necessary after all, but remember, a guinea pig must be cleaned only once every 3 months otherwise their skin will dry and will appear irritations. When you’re planning to wash your guinea pig you need to have a few things in handy. You will need 3 towels, shampoo for small animals, a soft hairbrush, a small plastic jug and a person that will help you.

The water needs to be warm and it should be placed in a bowl only 2 inches deep. It is very important to check the temperature of the water because the animal cannot stand hot water. The most recommended pet shampoo is Gorgeous Guineas. It will help keep the skin protected against infections and parasites. Before shampooing you will also have to place little Swarfega cream near his grease gland (it is situated near their “tail”). It will help you remove the grease. First time you need to wet his hair, but avoid the eyes, mouth and nose.
If water enters into these orifices your guinea pig may die. After you wet the hair, place the pig onto a towel and massage their back with a little shampoo. Be careful as they may tend to run away and escape. Shampoo needs to be left 3 minutes on their fur. After you leave the shampoo on their fur for a couple of minutes, put the pig into a towel and dry him so that him cannot lick the shampoo. Change water and rinse well pig’s hair and make sure you have removed all the shampoo. After you rinse the shampoo put your guinea pig into another dry towel.
To dry pig’s hair you can use a hair dryer set on the lowest level. Be careful with the hot air and the animal’s skin. After you dry the pig’s hair you need to brush him. Remember to brush your pig every day because the fur gets tangled. It is very painful for a guinea pig. You can remove the tangled hair with a scissor but you need to be extremely careful because the pig’s skin is very delicate and you can cause serious injuries.

Our highest recommendation is to visit a veterinary nurse. Another important thing is not to cut nails after bath. The bath is very stressful for a guinea pig and cutting his nails may affect his health. We recommend you to do this in another day if you want to have a guinea pig without nails. If you don’t know how to cut the nails you must ask the veterinary nurse because not all guinea pigs will stand this process. If you generally keep your animal outdoors, make sure you completely dried before taking him outside. A bath for your guinea pig is not very difficult as long as you are very careful.
